Metronidazole 400mg, while effective, can cause side effects. Common ones include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. These usually are mild and resolve without intervention. However, report persistent or severe gastrointestinal upset to your doctor.
Less Common Side Effects
Less frequent, but still possible, side effects include metallic taste in your mouth, headache, dizziness, and skin reactions like rash or itching. These reactions warrant a call to your healthcare provider for assessment and management. Rarely, more serious side effects, such as seizures, peripheral neuropathy (numbness or tingling in the extremities), or blood disorders, can occur. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these.
Precautions
Before starting metronidazole, inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions, particularly liver or kidney disease, neurological disorders, or blood disorders. Also, disclose all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, as interactions can occur. Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment and for at least 24 hours afterward, as this combination can cause a disulfiram-like reaction (severe nausea and vomiting).
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should discuss the risks and benefits of metronidazole with their doctor before use. The drug may pass into breast milk. During treatment, avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience dizziness or drowsiness. Regular blood tests might be needed to monitor potential side effects.
