Always take doxycycline with a full glass of water (at least 8 ounces). This helps the pill move smoothly down your esophagus.
Sit upright for at least 30 minutes after swallowing the pill. Avoid lying down, which can allow the pill to become lodged.
If you have difficulty swallowing pills, consider crushing the pill and mixing it with applesauce or pudding. Consult your doctor or pharmacist before doing this, as some formulations shouldn’t be crushed.
Take your medication with food. Food can help protect your esophagus.
Use a different form of doxycycline, if possible. Your doctor might recommend a liquid or suspension if you frequently experience swallowing difficulties.
Report any difficulty swallowing or chest pain to your doctor immediately. These could be signs of esophageal irritation.
Don’t take multiple pills at once. Swallowing many pills simultaneously increases your risk.
If you have concerns about taking doxycycline, discuss them openly with your healthcare provider. They can offer personalized advice and alternative treatments.
